observIQ is a software startup developing the first observability pipeline built for OpenTelemetry. We're building powerful open-source solutions used by Fortune 500 companies and small technology companies alike. We’re looking for an experienced Software Engineering Manager to lead and grow our talented engineering team while contributing to the development of cutting-edge products that serve our diverse customer base.

Role Overview

As a Software Engineering Manager, you will play a critical leadership role, overseeing the technical direction and execution of projects while mentoring and developing a high-performing team. You'll lead teams building a variety of products both web-based and local applications in technologies such as Node.js, Go, Java, Google Cloud, and Kubernetes. You will be responsible for the design, implementation, and maintenance of feature sets in a full-stack environment, including microservices in Node.js/Typescript, front-ends in React, and various backends like Elasticsearch. You'll collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including product management, UX/UI design, and operations, to ensure our software solutions are delivered efficiently, on time, and meet the highest standards of quality.

We’re seeking someone who is passionate about technology and leadership, has a proven track record of managing engineering teams, and is comfortable working in a fast-paced, startup environment. If you're a hands-on leader who can balance technical expertise with people management, this is the role for you.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous learning.
  • Manage and prioritize the team's work, ensuring projects are completed on time and meet business goals.
  • Oversee the design, development, and deployment of our software products, working closely with product managers and designers.
  • Ensure engineering best practices, including code quality, security, and scalability.
  • Drive technical decision-making and provide guidance on architecture and technology stack choices.
  • Actively participate in hiring, onboarding, and professional development of team members.
  • Communicate progress, challenges, and updates to key stakeholders regularly.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a Software Engineering Manager or in a similar leadership role (required).
  • Strong background in software development with proficiency in technologies like Node.js, Go, Typescript, Google Cloud, and Kubernetes (preferred).
  • Experience managing a team of engineers in an agile environment (required).
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills (required).
  • Experience with cloud platforms (GCP, AWS, or Azure), microservices architecture, and DevOps practices (required).
  • Ability to balance technical responsibilities with people management and mentorship (required).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent work experience (required).

Location: Grand Rapids, MI (Hybrid - initial on-site work required for 3 to 6 months before transitioning to a hybrid model)
